Comment on The purpose of school by Sarah El-Helw

Thanks for the blog post! I think understanding is very important, and is essential to anyone’s education. However, memorization maybe necessary, especially in cases where people need to memorize equations, or Biology, as mentioned in a previous comment. I think understand goes hand in hand with memorization.

Comment on Learning to be a Learner by Sarah El-Helw

Thank you for your post! I thought it was great. I think you get people to think, and I like how you approached it from where we all maybe in the future. As future professors, we need to figure out what works best. We need to get it right, and work hard to get it right. The 10-20 minute attention span is stunning. I think some of us may of heard these statistics before. However, we didn’t actually realize how serious that is for our future careers. Thanks for the post!

Comment on Are the students active or object in the classroom? by Sarah El-Helw

Thanks for your post! I totally agree that students should be an active part of the learning process. I had another idea while I was reading your post. I think the class participation grade will cause people to attend at the beginning… If the class becomes interesting enough, they will want to attend. Especially if you implement the random presentations for extra credit. I think that would be great.

Comment on Wait, girls aren’t good at math? by Sarah El-Helw

Thanks for your post. Apparently the idea that “girls aren’t good at math” is common in some areas… But I don’t remember growing up with it either. I think it’s an anomaly at this day and age to have this type of thinking. Especially that at this point today, we are actually oriented and focused on recruiting girls to Math, Science, and Engineering. So many of the STEM programs exist to help kids in general, and girls in particular enjoy math and science. Thanks for your post!

Comment on Is it just a “performance”? by Sarah El-Helw

Nice post! Thanks so much for that. I was just reminded that I have experience as a teacher.. It’s been a while since I’ve been a TA but evidently, I too have experience and can relate. Students sometimes are in the habit of skipping class. However, it seems like you really love teaching. And yes, I affirm. It is not a one way road, I agree. We have to find out what our students need and do it for them. Thanks for your post.

Comment on Defying Gravity by Sarah El-Helw

Thanks for the awesome post. I totally can relate to what you’re saying so much. It is truly going to take some adjustment to figure out how to teach… Because it will be a first time try. However, I think once we figure it out it will go awesome… Because we have what it takes to make a good teacher… Passion!

Comment on What are these “note” things anyway? by Sarah El-Helw

Thanks for this post. I strongly believe that a lot of students need to figure out how to take notes. I am also a huge supporter of old-fashion note taking. I don’t like note taking on computers. I remember in undergrad, folks would watch videos or look at comics, and it would be so distracting. At the same time, it’s necessary to leave info for students to fill in on their slides in class to maintain their attention span.
