I would argue that your experience is the best example of how different the thinking of engineering graduates can be. We need ethical, issue-aware, sensitive engineers but the schools are training one dimensional problem solvers.

I would have to agree with you that science is advancing more quickly than our understanding of its effects on us as a species. I personally went to a liberal arts school, where I did an engineering degree. It was a relatively unconventional approach, where I got to study subjects like culture, philosophy, language, history, due to it being a part of the degree requirements. In hindsight, I think that a more diverse knowledge has helped me ask questions in meetings related to Artificial Intelligence that relate to the ethical implications of my chosen specialty. Are the ethical constraints on automated vehicles well understood and applied by the engineers who build them?

Humanities is entirely important in our curriculum. It teaches us the core beliefs of places around the world and helps educate us about how people expressed their emotions through their art work. It is through the humanities that we learn about the world and its history, and are able to think critically and creatively. There is not a doubt that Humanities majors is what we need in today’s world – as you mentioned, the “larger scale”. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
