Comment on The Godfather: Russian Edition by rachelharriman10

I think this relates to the end of the Soviet Union because it opened a window for the Russian Mafia to come through. Though the Russian Mafia was present during the Soviet Union, as mentioned in my post, they allowed them to work as long as it did not effect the agenda of the communist rule. After the fall their was no real agenda or plan and this made the Russian Mafia an accessory to the government.

I agree, when I first started reading your post, the first thing I thought about was the American 18th Amdenednt and the era of prohibition. You later touched on it, and the impacts. I think it is very interesting how it worked in the Soviet Union but had the negative attribute of tax loss. It is somewhat ironic how after all that, money talked and the policies would end.

Love the title, very appropriate especially while we enter finals week here at school. I think your comparison to 9/11 and the impact it had on people was very interesting. Especially how it took Soviet leadership 3 weeks to respond to the crisis. Your comment about how American’s felt in the wake of 9/11, was also important, there would have been a tremendous uproar and the questioning of government if the President of the United States had waited so long to speak up. It does really show the impact that this event had on the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Whoever owned/controlled the Chernobyl facility at the time, since the failure of the reactor and consequently the release of radiation and other harmful chemicals in the air, where they responsible for the cost of those who died due to the release of radiation? Or were the families to handle that?

To begin what do you mean the same radiation as a long airplane ride? Also, giving tours to this area is very interesting, I wonder if anyone who has ever taken the tour has needed medical attention, either immediately or over time and if their visit h…

The lack of communication between government and the people definitely would have played a role in the declining trust towards the government. While I don’t have any questions, this post reminds me of the short clip we watched on Thursday, towards the end of class. The Chernobyl disaster was detrimental to some individuals who called the surrounding area home. It’s sad to know that some people choose to live here knowing the effects.

I like how you pointed out how the United States handled the Three-Mile Island incident, every country everywhere has handled some situation poorly. We tend to point those mistakes out more harshly in this class, I don’t know if it’s because we still have some of that Cold War mentality or if it’s just because we don’t have much favoritism for the Soviet Union.

Comment on We Have No Sex Here by smaloney

Prostitution is always an interesting topic to me, there’s always this focus on the woman who is the prostitute. Usually they try to depict the prostitute as immoral, or trapped in her position, or simply as an object. While it’s true that prostitutes are being paid for sex, men keep paying them, and if it’s immoral to have sex for money why isn’t it immoral to give money for sex? Most of these men who write against the “evils” of prostitution tend to ignore that whole side of the issue.
