Comment on Chernobyl: Disaster at the worst of Times by kschnabel

Nice post! I like how you pointed out that the disaster caused Gorbachev to see the very real danger of nuclear war, and forced him to change his foreign policy strategy. It is also interesting how the disaster forced Glasnost to actually be enforced.

Comment on The Baltic Independence Movement by kschnabel

Nice post! I found it interesting how important the Nazi-Soviet pact still was to Baltic citizens in the 90’s. I also found the singing revolution very interesting. I really like the photo of the human chain you included!

Comment on Say No to Alcohol by kschnabel

Great post! It is interesting to see how much the anti-alcohol campaign backfired socially and economically. It really show how some problems, like alcoholism, are far too complex to solve on a mass level.

Comment on The Theatre Thaw(?) by kschnabel

Nice post! I find it really interesting that Brecht’s work was not welcome in the United States or the Soviet Union. I also really liked your point about how we often gloss over US censorship when criticizing other countries. Overall, I really liked how you emphasized that while the thaw did allow some artistic freedom, the state still censored voices that were critical of the regime.

Comment on The Race to Space by kschnabel

Very interesting! I did not know that Sputnik sent out a signal strong enough that amateur radio operators could listen. I think that space race is one of the most fascinating aspects of the Cold War!

Comment on A Dog Called Laika by kschnabel

🙁 I didn’t know that Laika died so soon into the mission! At least she gets to be honored as one of the most famous dogs of all time. Nice post! I think the space race is one of the most fascinating aspects of the Cold War.

Comment on Dacha: The Soviet Dream by kschnabel

Nice post! I like how you contrasted the social implications of owning a dacha throughout history. It is interesting how the Dacha has persisted as a cultural tradition throughout time, and although it was demonized for some time, remained a romantic ideal. I love the photos you included!
