Its also important to remember that for now anyway, it seems that our US legacy in Afghanistan is looking to be more effective and stabilizing than the Soviet legacy.
It’s also quite sad that after all of the blood and treasure spilled in Afghanistan, it seems the Russian military still hadn’t learned its lesson about fighting an occupation was against determined Muslim insurgents.
I totally agree with you that Gorbachev had a big hand in this new youth movement. The environment around kids growing up really effects how they develop, and this new culture that Gorbachev had created payed a huge part in it.
As crazy as it seems, Russia really needed those countries. Russia made it seem like they needed them, but the USSR really needed everyone a in. This may have no been the defining factor, but it was a huge contribution.
