Modernization of Blogs@VT platform requires user action to save content

The Blogs@VT WordPress blogging platform is scheduled for replacement in spring 2022 in order to bring it into compliance with modern security requirements. The new Blogs@VT platform, located at blogs.tlos.vt.edu, will continue to provide WordPress services, including a collection of popular themes and plugins, to faculty and students for course- and degree-related activities. The new platform will require all users to authenticate using Virginia Tech’s single sign-on (SSO) service.

The current system will remain online until June 2023; however, no new sites can be created at this location after Jan. 14, 2022. Owners of existing sites can continue to edit their sites through May 20, 2022, after which blogs.lt.vt.edu will transition to a read-only platform. Site owners who wish to continue blogging will need to export their content to another Virginia Tech service by June 30, 2023.

Owners of sites currently hosted at blogs.lt.vt.edu should determine whether they want to maintain these sites going forward. For sites that can be retired, no action is needed. For sites that need to be migrated, site owners have three options:

  • Beginning on Dec. 20, 2021, course-based or degree-related site owners can move their content to the new Blogs@VT platform, blogs.tlos.vt.edu, by following a step-by-step guide for content migration.
  • Department and other non-course-related site owners can move their content to another Virginia Tech hosting service.
  • Faculty, students, or alumni who want additional flexibility and control can move their content to any private web hosting company that supports WordPress.

Questions, concerns, or requests for assistance with blog migration should be submitted using 4Help.vt.edu.
