Since their domestication, dogs have been used for a variety of purposes other than simple companionship. The timeline below focuses on how the domestic dog has influenced scientific advances (blue), the economy (green), and warfare (red) throughout history. As well as highlighting the many advantages which the domestication of the dog has brought to mankind, it may also highlight the one-sidedness of this relationship. Can we really claim that domestication is mutually beneficial when we use dogs for some of the purposes below?
