Oh how I would love if the system was rebuilt on passion versus fear. If learners had the opportunity as children to focus more on what they are passionate about, we would have a lot more innovative discoveries. Children are very smart but I feel they hold back because they fear being told they are wrong. Educators should support learning with passion more.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I completely agree with you. It is sometimes difficult for students to memorize all of the information being thrown at them. Faculty should make sure the student is connected with what is being taught along with the people in the class. Throughout my education, I have dealt with imposter syndrome and faculty should find a way to make everyone feel connected.
Comment on Did Engineers Even Have Empathy in the First Place? by John
Meredith, I found your post interesting. I too read Dr. Henry’s article but I had a different view. The problem is that doctors and engineers are focusing on the trees instead of seeing the whole forest. The “devil is in the details” is a common expression that I hear in the engineering field. I agree that engineers need to focus on the greater good of society as they are looking at the forest but most projects are focusing on putting up that new bridge or how to build that widget. The problem is not the engineer looking at the trees. It is the client who is paying that engineer that needs to understand the forest that he looking at.

Big agreement on this point. I believe empathy should be taught at school and also practiced. teachers should show empathy as well as students. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you Sara for your impressive comment. I hope we as educators can change the rigid traditional way of teaching and also thinking step by step and also adding the taste of humanities to engineering sciences and all majors.

I agree on the term conflict; however, the basics of engineering are still taught about the same as engineering training and large companies in Mining, Minerals and oil and gas support this kind of training for engineers with bachelor’s degrees. In grad school, the story is a little bit different but there is still a little room for innovation. I understand that new graduate engineers should follow the conventions and it is how engineering shaped in the first place to solving life problems step by step and moving forward to face a new problem. But, I believe educators should teach them that there are other ways to do stuff but it is done this way because of a certain history and asks students to think about new ways although they are not practical yet!. Thank you so much for your valuable comment.

I agree, it seems there is a long way especially in engineering school to have these issues fixed. Thank you for your great comment.
