Comment on Education of the Future? by erinleighvt

Lecturing is the teaching method of the past. It has been shown repeatedly that it is not very effective — and I think with the emergence of social media, PPT, online learning modules etc, there are so many other methods that can be utilized. Peoples’ attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter (due to computers, phones, social media etc), so the effectiveness of lectures is likely decreasing still.

Comment on Education of the Future? by Ziyad Alhamdan

I agree that lecturing is outdated. Learning through experimenting is superior in many ways. The famous architect Edmund Bacon once said “its in the doing that the idea comes”. Meaning that hands-on experience help achieves true learning. Additionally, the cultural aspect that Minerva embracing is without a doubt a unique approach to education.
Thanks for referring to the Minerva program, it is definitely worth investigating.

Comment on MOOCs are cool! by sarahes

I agree that MOOCs can be a very useful tool for some things. As an R-user myself, I cannot count the times I’ve googled a problem with a particular line of code and found the answer on some type of online forum (shoutout to Stack overflow). I also have used a MOOC such as Laerd to refresh my memory on statistics. However, I think there are some potential issues with MOOCs that are not addressed. There is a difference in the learning that goes on between reading about biology (or most sciences) online and completing a lab-based course in person where students get to complete experiments by hand. The same holds true for art/design type courses. There is also the issue of recieving credit. Unless the MOOC has a contract with a university, taking MOOCs won’t help a students complete their graduation requirements. While MOOCS may serve as great supplemental material, I don’t think they are the perfect substitute for a university course.

Martel Electronics engineers federal agencies with the best quality police dash camera system made in the United States. Also, if you are researching material for American police-car-camera systems, Martel created the Frontline Cam. It’s a military tested military grade officer worn system that’s been put through hell in harsh conflict zones like Africa.

Comment on Misemployed: Is being employed enough for you? by erinleighvt

Interesting. This is true – while being employed is impertative in order to make a living, support a family, etc, if you are really unhappy with your job, you likely will not perform very well. This could lead to losing your job or just you being incredibly unhappy. And being unhappy with something as time consuming as work, is detrimental to your overall health.

Comment on Academia + Social Media by erinleighvt

I think that social media can be a great tool for education; however, I agree that it can be distracting for many and challenging to separate personal from professional social media platforms. Social media is also a huge time-suck. Hours can easily be spent on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc.
