Alex, I really enjoyed your blog, the connections you make between Doctor Who and the lessons that we should take for being better teaching are informative and spot on. Two of them that resonated with me the most Show Humility and Be Willing to help and accept help:) . I believe it is really important for us to not let our egos come in the way of a process that is larger than ourselves. We should not in anyway hinder learning for our students. Lastly, getting feedback is a key to improving (oneself and teaching) and if I am not willing to get feedback than I should just quit.

Tanya, thanks for your feedback. I clarified who Doctor Who is a little more in the opening paragraph. It’s my favorite television show! It’s what I watch when I want to go someplace else, I highly recommend it!

Molly, I just found your blog website to read some of your words. I really like the ideas you are addressing in this blog, specifically when you say higher education can not see the forest for the trees. I don’t have an answer either for this problem, but I see the problem more than ever after coming to Tech. Smaller institutions don’t struggle as much with focusing on the students journey but large institutions are notoriously for it. I think this TedTalk may be a start for change:
I recommend you watch it and it would awesome to catch up and discuss changing the world!

I feel the same way. I have looked over LAU’s mission statement (where we did our undergrad) and you can notice how different the mission statement is compared to VT. LAU is more focused on teaching and building one-self but VT is more focused on research and serving the community. I definitely underestimated how much information the mission statements tell you about a university.

I really like the idea of bringing a synergy between STEM and non-STEM field, not just collaborations within STEM fields. Non- STEM fields seem intrinsically motivated by nature but STEM fields, currently, are not. This idea is like interdisciplinary research on steroids which may be the exact way to break discipline silos!
