It is challenging to maintain a real inclusive learning environment in a diverse group. Sometimes bias are unconscious, or hidden to people with different background and culture. Stereotype does exist in people’s minds, and teachers need to be aware of that and to make sure effective learning can be achieved for the minorities in designing classes.

Comment on At school, between necessity and freedom by Qingyun Ping

Each student has a unique circumstance. I think online courses work great for people who work and are doing continuing education. Those people are usually very self-motivated and have their goal in the learning process. However, I think it could never replace the face-to-face classes. They have different learning outcomes. Learning incorporates social and material. Even classroom settings can affect learning, not to mention whether it’s face-to-face or face-to-screen.

Comment on 4.0 GPA. One grading fits all? by Qingyun Ping

I like it when you brought up “What a 4.0 GPA tells a prospective employer is: this guy is great at finding his way through the system and he is dedicated to that task.” I think it’s not easy to tell whether getting a good grade means a real good grasp of the knowledge. In some cases, the grading system has trained students to be skilled at getting good grades rather than learning.

We have to make connections with prior knowledge to construct the foundation to new knowledge. Exactly. However, basic knowledge (compulsory/required courses) often doesn't seem appealing to students. For example, Biochemistry for dental school students. Students will need strong motivation, and teachers often need to play the role of motivator.

Comment on I’m feeling a little disconnected about Connected Learning… by Qingyun Ping

I feel more and more people are getting addicted to social media. We spent tons of time on the internet, and sometimes doing nothing meaningful. So I would say the transformation of learning needs to adapt to people’s life styles. Connected learning somehow is a way to keep up with the evolution trend. If students are passionate about connected life, then they might be more motivated in connected learning?
