Thank you for discussing the use of labtops in classroom. I still remember in primary school, parents bought a computer to children to help them learn, but most of us used it to play video games or chatting 90% of the time. Apps or settings that can prevent students from entertainment when they are studying.

Comment on Neglectful mom vs. concerned friend by Sihui Ma

Hi Kristine, I agree with you that whether technology is good or not depends on how we use it. Thank you for bringing up the phone. I used an App called Moment to track how long I will be on my phone each day, and the results surprised me. My phone did a great job on making communication much more convenient, but I also wasted a lot of time on it.

Comment on Reflects on a Short Video that Paulo Freire Talks about Curiosity by Sihui Ma

Hi Dr. Nelson, thank you for your suggestion. Yes, I agree with you that if the teachers consider them as co-learners of students, they would be much easier to equal the status with students, and create a more free-speaking learning environment. This concept is also consistent with the Chinese philosophy of “Learning is a life-long process; we learn until we die”.

Hi Ken, thank you for your interest in Chinese history, and I am happy to explain that. From BC156 to BC 87, Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Wu_of_Han) took charge. He accepted the suggestions from Zhongshu Dong, a scholar, to promote Confucianism as the official ideology of the Chinese imperial state. Since then, every emperor in ancient continued to promote Confucianism and it became the dominant Chinese philosophy.

Thank you for bring up Dr. Donna Riley to us, and she is amazing that she develop a pedagogy specifically for women to learning engineering. Her practice of breaking the Western hegemony is brave and remarkable. The introduction of thermodynamic inventions by women and non-westerners will build the confidence of women students and encourage them to succeed in the engineering career.

Comment on Brave Space v. Safe Space by Sihui Ma

Thank you for sharing your ways of creating the brave spaces in class. These are smart ways, especially the first one will set the tone of the class for the whole semester at the very beginning. I agree with you that teachers should manage and create with the students a free-speech environment with respect to others, and without hurting anyone’s feelings.

Comment on She is not disabled. She has a disability. by Sihui Ma

Thank you for sharing your own experience with us, and your post is impressive, especially the idea of getting exposure to difference early. It is kind of hard for current children, because children with disability are recommended to go to special schools, thus they are separated. I agree with you that if children are exposed to children who has a disability from an early on age, they will learn more about how to better communicate without hurting them.
I think of Krystalyn’s syllabus on Health Communication, and if this course works out, it will be really helpful for students who want to develop a career in health communication to decrease the stigmatization and provide better services.
