Comment on The Katyn Forest Massacre by jkelly24

This was something very interesting to read. While its hard to stop the gears of conspiracy from spinning it is incredibly tragic that something like that would occur on the anniversary of this tragic event.

Comment on The Veterans are Back in Town!! by Phil

I enjoyed reading this post. I think this is a subject that can be glossed over at times. It’s important to know that while the war was won, millions of civilians and soldiers were returning to an unrecognizable home. Like you said, the younger generations had hope, but for many everything was lost.

My comments are going to seem kind of random, but here goes: 1) That Open Access journal article is fascinating. I had a “worlds’ collide” kind of moment that won’t make sense to others, but just wanted you to know that it happened. 2) Your production values are generally better than the two You Tube videos you reference — and your historical perspective MUCh more persuasive. 3) Let’s talk about counter-factuals….

Comment on Germany’s Mistake is a Soviet Success by scmaclay

There were a lot of German missteps that contributed to the success of the Soviets in World War II. The terrain and weather were certainly no comfort to the Germans. The big irony of the war was Germany expecting a quick victory against the Soviets and a drawn-out conflict with the French and British. Instead, the Soviets, army and citizens, could withstand the German invasion long enough to turn around the war. Great post! That account of the winter is very grim and captures the war of attrition.

Comment on Literally the Only Time the US and the USSR Didn’t Hate Each Other by A. Nelson

You bring up an important point here. Neither side trusted the other, and the distrust was perhaps even deeper on Churchill’s part than on Stalin’s. For all of his suspicions of Western motivations (which were largely right, as it turned out), Stalin wanted the Grand Alliance to succeed.

Comment on Smells Like A Cover Up by scmaclay

Your last paragraph is spot on! The Katyn Forest Massacre not only spoiled relations between the Soviet Union and Poland, but it still affects politics today. I do have a few questions. What made a Polish citizen a Soviet target? Did they focus on ideology as the criteria, or was it the position they held in the previous government?

Comment on Episode 5: The Motherland Strikes Back by pgiovannini

I always enjoy reading about the battle of Stalingrad. If you have yet seen it, I recommend watching the movie Stalingrad (1993). It gives depiction of what the German soldiers went through leading up to the battle of Stalingrad and throughout the battle itself.
