What would be your best suggestion on trying to mold creative thinking in someone whose thought processes are generally linear without them feeling patronized or alienated?

I totally get that! I hope that one day, you can fill your free time with absolutely nothing. 🙂

It really gets to be exhausting. We have the tendency to want to compete for who is the busiest. My friend and I had a running joke in undergrad, from what her brother referred to as the “oppression wars.” You know, when you’re complaining to your friend about your workload, and they often manage to tell you how many more papers and assignments they have than you. It becomes impossible to make time for mental/emotional well-being, despite being told by the university administration to do so.

Exactly, Medha. I think that also has to come with the understanding that all students are not young, kids in their late teen’s/early 20’s. Many students are all different ages from all walks of life. That consideration is very important.

What were some of the highlights of the conversation? Curious.

Thank you! I had a great time being a part of the GEDI community.

Feeding off what you were saying, if we don’t engage our students with worthwhile and meaningful activities…it makes way for apathy and eventually unethical behavior.

I think universities still use a lot Facebook to spread messages among universities. Now, universities are even using chatbots to better engage with students on information they need. Facebook already has it’s own platform for building chatbots. Thus, it will be a very popular platform for a while.
I definitely share the same concerns about the technology in our life. Sometime ironically we would use apps/technology to help us restrict the time we spend with technology. If I do knot have my online calendar, I am lost as I do not save anything in my memory now. It’s like we are operating in short term memory only, which i don’t think it helps us. It even makes me question: are we really learning anything? we have all these information and tools around us that we don’t really need to learn anything but search for it when we need it.
I enjoyed reading this. I share the same idea. I wish universities also take some actions in terms of encouraging mentorship culture, especially among international students. We leave our career back home and try to learn things here and sometime we need that mentor to guide us not to get lost.
