Comment on Do medical students really lose their empathy? by Iris

Sad that there is really nothing he thinks he can do. I guess the same thing applies to us all in graduate school. We often come into the programs with grand plans, towards helping the society. Somewhere along the line, we just want to be done with school and graduate and therefore, we settle for something easier. Too bad, perhaps we can save the world after school, when we do not have the extra burden of committee meetings and passing classes.

Comment on Teaching for the 21st Century by Iris

Unfortunately, it is too easy, especially as graduate students, to normalize everything, deal with data sets, figures and graphs, without the empathy necessary to connect with the people. I have managed to convince myself that I do this because I am a student and that I will be more socially involved and empathetic once I am done with school. I want to continue to believe that this is true.

Comment on FAST IS NOT ALWAYS A GOOD THING by Iris

You know this too! I am so happy that you also think unhealthy foods taste better. I was beginning to think it was my mind, collaborating with my taste buds, to play pranks on me.
I agree that indeed our minds are changing and processing things differently than it would have in the absence of online search. When I didn’t have access to the internet and had to do research solely on the knowledge from books, my mind was quick to absorb as much as I could from a book before I put it down. But now, I glimpse quickly through online articles, find what I need and write down the title of the article so I can come back to it again whenever I need it. I no longer make a big deal of absorbing all that I can from it before returning it to the library….
