Comment on Teaching for Social Justice by Jyots21

I agree with your post Armin and with what Stephen said in his comment. It is extremely important that I see people like me, in places that I want to get to, so that I can believe I can get there. The same applies to my profession. Example, a student came up to me one time and said that she wanted to be a counselor but her parents wouldn’t agree because they said to her, “have you ever met an Indian lady who is a counselor?” She said that seeing and meeting with me was her answer, that she wouldn’t back down now because she knew she could get there. It is imperative that we do that as educators for each and every single student…seems like a tough goal but I am incorrigible in my optimism. It will happen one day.

Comment on Musing on my Teaching Self by Jyots21

Thank you for your post Britton. I believe I have done this test before in a different form and I believe my color was green (not like the Wicked Witch of the West, although some may agree to that too). However, I really like your idea of looking within and really this is an exercise to try and find out who we are as an individual and make ourselves a little vulnerable because unless we do how can we integrate our selves with our praxis?!

Comment on Is This On The Test? by Jyots21

“I find it pretty disturbing to see occupations that have more constructive feedback in their performance reviews than our classrooms have in their course assessments.” Now that is an issue, right. So we say that we are testing and assessing so that we send out a prepared workforce and yet…..I do believe that some of this may also be the result of systemic structures, however there must be a way out of it…I think there are changes taking place gradually and it is taking a little too long…

Comment on Do they care about all this time I spend giving feedback? by Jyots21

I’m never the one to know answers for sure. I wonder however, what would happen in your class if you ask them whether your feedback is valued, needed…however you wanted to phrase that. I think you’d probably get a wide range. Now if you want them to care about the feedback you give then what do you do? How would you alter or fine tune the way you facilitate learning in your classes for that?…Probably more questions than answers….sorry!

Comment on Mindful vs Mindless: A no brainer by Jyots21

Robert, you bring up some good points. Do read Ashley’s post (https://blogs.lt.vt.edu/gedimusings/2018/02/04/mindful-learning-myths-of-learning/) cause she definitely shares your concerns. Jack also brings up a point that there is the syllabus and the time pressure and the standardized tests….so then what’s going to change? Something has to give…what do you think that should be?
