I really love your definition of critical pedagogy and the breakdown of all the little pieces involved. I especially like the humanistic component that reminds us we need to vulnerable in the classroom. I’m definitely going to keep this in mind.

Comment on Diversity benefits everyone by Maryam Yuhas
Great post! I agree with you about how diversity can be really beneficial. However I do think there is space for conversations around it in the science field! Its not just about issues that arise within the class, but also about making sure that everyone’s voices are equally heard and everyone has an equal chance to participate and complete assignments in class. It kind of makes me think about that famous image about equality vs. equity.
Comment on Brave Spaces Are Preferred by Maryam Yuhas
This is definitely interesting to think about! I could see how the terminology could make a difference specially if time is taken to explain it to the students in the classroom.
Comment on What animals can teach us about inclusive pedagogy by Maryam Yuhas
Great post! I really enjoyed reading and looking at all the cute pictures. I completely agree with the points brought up in this post… we can learn lessons specially about empathy from animals.
Comment on Step Away from the Podium and Teaching as Yourself by Maryam Yuhas
I really like how you updated the blog to include your strategies. It almost sounds like a mission statement for your teaching style, maybe something you can include in your syllabus or something along those lines! Great post, definitely gave me some inspiration.
Comment on My Teaching Style by Maryam Yuhas
I always think about this issue as well… how do you get engagement with a large class, and these classes tend to be the required foundation classes that may not be interesting to students.. they may only be there to move onto the next “more interesting” (probably smaller) class!

Thanks for your post! A good reminder to always be yourself, and find your own teaching voice that will translate into a better classroom environment.
Comment on Are grades problematic? The grade polemic? by Maryam Yuhas
I agree grades are tricky, but I definitely think they are not the ONLY way to assess what a student knows. So why not get rid of them and replace with something better? I really like how you brought in the Mark Twain quote… and think about how long ago that was written and in how many literature classes that book is read in and that quote is highlighted, yet we still have some big changes that need to be made in the classroom.
Comment on Is this blog post for a grade? by Maryam Yuhas
I think a lot of people in the education system probably think exactly what you said at the end, why change something that is working? I think a majority of people don’t see something wrong with the way students learn currently. So aside from us as future educators changing our teaching philosophy, I think we need to do some extra work to change the system as a whole.
Comment on The technology balancing act by Maryam Yuhas
I think you bring up some good thought provoking questions. How do we get that balance? It seems to me that most people are agreeing that we need technology in the classrooms but everyone is somehow ending up with these thoughts about balancing its use and ban in the classroom. I think to answer that question is a personal one and what you choose and decide to do and I feel like there are multiple ways we can make this work. Great post!
