I think your eccentric professor and I would get along!! I like his style! LOL! The problem with “having an adult conversation….” is we are talking about some undergraduate students who aren’t quite ready to adult yet. It would be great if they could all just follow along with the power points, but, they honestly don’t because they get bored and want to multitask.

You are correct in that students must be able to effectively use electronics, but, I’m not so sure having a laptop open in my class would help them in that capacity. Most standardized tests nowadays have computerized practice exams which should be utilized under “real” conditions and time constraints.

I absolutely will utilize technology because I know that it makes sense to do so in some circumstances. I’ve just seen too much web surfing and FB status updating especially with the undergraduate students. Like Shaun mentions above the PP will be available on CANVAS online so even if their “handwritten” notes miss something then they can review the lecture afterwards. There are definitely pros and cons to every situation.

I think you and I would get along great as co-teachers! LOL! Yes, I would say that conversation and deep engagement is going to be critical for my discipline instruction in the future. Hahahaha, the section on peers looking at another’s computer screen is totally relative and happens. I’m a private person so wouldn’t look at someone’s screen but now days I feel that privacy is not respected in most situations. Community and eye contact are what make a class fun and enjoyable. I really enjoyed your comment!

I completely understand how if the discipline calls for the use of a laptop then it should be encouraged. Yeah, I would never trust studying for a test based upon someone else’s notes. I’m too much of a type A personality to do such a thing! LOL! I think it is neat that you were all able work together and build a strong community. Thanks for sharing!

You are raising an important question and one that higher ed does not want to answer: why must classes be so large? Answer: faculty are expensive and we want to hire as few of them as possible. And at an R-1 university, we don’t want them to spend time teaching that could be spent bringing in funding for their research. It’s a problem.
I can give another example of “Citizen Science”. It is a fact that many astronomical discoveries in the last decade is due to amateur astronomers and enthusiasts. This has become possible mainly because of the strong network of professionals and amateurs sharing data and news :

Your experiences and interactions with pedagogical practices are important and unique, and I hope you will feel comfortable sharing some of them here. As others have noted, there are trade offs to engaging in public forums like this one. Yes, one does have to be careful about what one says. This isn’t a diary. If something feels too personal, or makes you feel especially vulnerable, don’t go there. On the other hand, having a platform where one’s voice can be amplified can be a powerful and empowering experience, especially if your voice is one that might have not been heard in the past. Please come talk to me if you are concerned about this. The class is supposed to work for you not make you miserable.
Thank you for your comment. I do address stem in this blog “…or some disciplines it is necessary and acceptable that students memorize course material such as the STEM fields.” My comment on teaching to the test is more directed towards K-12.
