Comment on Gopnik’s Galore by bmester

Interesting topic and I particularly enjoyed the pictures illustrating the squatting. One question I had was surrounding the groupings of the Gopniks. You mention petty crime, but do you think they ever formed gangs or anything bigger than just the small crimes?

I also wrote about the disaster at Chernobyl! I certainly agree with your analysis of the social implication. The lack of transparency led to a huge push for more openness. I also found the physical effects on the environment particularly interesting!

Great post! I thought your post was on an incredibly interesting topic! One picture that stood out to me was the one with the mos.ru in the corner and picture of the stadium. To me it looks like the construction was a nod to the Roman Coliseum. It would be interesting to see the impressions the architects were under when constructing it!

Great post! I was particularly interested in the global coverage part and the ramifications put on the USSR after sending in troops. What negative consequences did the Soviet Union face? And what in particular did the United States do?

I thought your post was interesting and thought provoking. It was particularly noteworthy to read about the power struggle after Stalin’s death. I wonder how the country would have been different if Beria or Malenkov would have been the successor. My guess would be to follow the economic reforms each leader would likely make. Beria would liberalize, Malenkov would fund industry, and we already know what Khrushchev did.

Based upon your post, it certainly appears that the USSR took care of their veterans. With the staggering number of them returning to the homefront, it is very fortunate they reintegrated them. I wonder how comparable some of the Western Allies were in regards to compensating their own veterans?

I was really compelled by your story. I found myself invested in the Kulak. It was interesting to see how different nations used different groups of people as scapegoats. Like one of the previous comments (Claire) mentioned, I am curious how this is/was taught in Russian schools.

The pictures you intertwine with your writing really enhance the post! They show the many different sides of the revolution specifically dealing with women/gender roles. Additionally, your entire website overall is really well done. I think the use of starbucks is very unique.

Comment on The Roles of Women & Revolution by bmester

I appreciated how you brought the contrast between both the good the revolution brought and the bad. It is clear that women got a lot more civil liberties, but at the expense in other aspects of life.
