Comment on The Singing Revolution by Dalton Ragland

I enjoyed your post thoroughly; the Baltic states are full of interesting history. Do you think that these revolts against the Soviet Union helped lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991? Did it fit a pattern that was occurring across Eastern …

Comment on We Have No Sex Here by Dalton Ragland

Your post was very interesting! Do you see any similarities between the prostitution situation in the Soviet Union and the prostitution situation in the United States? Are the reasons that these women turn to prostitution the same or different in both situations?

Comment on Russian Rock’n’Roll, Avoiding Mind Control? by Dalton Ragland

Your post was very interesting! I never would have thought that rock’n’roll would have been so different in the Soviet Union. In America, we think of music as being a way to express our own views, not the governments. Do you think that using music as a way of state propaganda takes away from the pleasure of it?

Comment on Aw (Foe)y What Have We Done by Dalton Ragland

I also wrote on the period of detente. Your focus on the Soviet involvement in Afghanistan is a good examination on how the period of detente came to an end. Despite the advancement that had been made in relations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the direct opposition between the two in Afghanistan erased this progress. Do you think this period of detente could have continued if the Soviet had never gotten involved in Afghanistan?

Comment on When I Was Young We Played Outside by Dalton Ragland

I enjoyed your focus on the collective. It is true that the collective was a central part of Soviet life and it makes sense why the government and entertainment industry tried to support the collect aspects of society over spending time alone inside. D…

Comment on Rain Makes Corn by Dalton Ragland

I enjoyed the title of your post along with how well you tied it into the post. Khruschev was trying to boost the Soviet’s agricultural industry much like the housing industry; however, trying to do things too quickly or in too much excess can have the opposite effect. Very interesting post!

Comment on Soviet Leisure Time by Dalton Ragland

I enjoyed your post examining the evolution of leisure time during the 1950s and 60s. The establishment of stadiums of such size and grandeur help signify the Soviet Unions’s increasing economic standing as well as giving something back to the people for them to enjoy.

Comment on The New Boss by Dalton Ragland

Very informative overview on the effect Stalin’s death had on the political leadership situation in he Soviet Union. It seems many of the other leaders were influenced by Stalin’s manipulative schemes and showed that they had the ability to come up with their own. Do you think that this frantic grab for power helped lead to the political instability later on in the Soviet Union?

Comment on A Dog Called Laika by Dalton Ragland

Its horrible that I dog had to suffer for this, but it does speak to how far mankind has come in the past half century. Its ironic because competition, which is viewed negatively in socialist systems, between the U.S. and the Soviet Union is what drove the Soviet Union to accomplish so much in space technology. Very informative post on a dog whose story should never be forgotten!
