Comment on The Housing Crisis and the Rise of “Khrushchev’s Slums” by Emma

Great post! It’s interesting that both the U.S. and the USSR invested in fairly misguided housing projects after the war. Khrushchev built the slums, and in the U.S., many infamous high rise projects were constructed. Neither development plan turned out very well.

Comment on The Veterans are Back in Town!! by Emma

I’m really glad that you wrote about veterans! I feel like this issue is often glossed over or forgotten about, but countries often struggle with reintegrating veterans into society. The way Vietnam War veterans were treated when they arrived home is a good example. Countries often prefer not to think about the trauma these people experienced, but it’s important to remember them and help them. On an unrelated, less serious note, those huts (zemlianki) kind of look like the houses of The Shire in The Lord of the Rings.

Comment on The Use of Propaganda in Films by Emma

I also did my post on Soviet film! I think it’s really sad that great filmmakers like Eisenstein, Kuleshov, and Vertov were stifled during the Stalinist period – I can’t imagine what great things they would have done with greater creative license.
