Comment on Betrayal at the Kremlin! by nhinguyen14

Agreed with everyone else, this was hilarious! It was very easy to understand. The Secret Speech and Khrushchev’s denunciation played such a huge role in Russia’s thaw and their decline of communism.

Comment on The Race to Space by nhinguyen14

Again with the hyperlinks! I liked that you pointed out how the Russians weren’t going to let the United States beat them; this competition drives the relationship between the two great powers. If I remember correctly, I think Russia sent a man to outer space before the United States as well.

Comment on The Worst Thing About Prison was… the Dementors by nhinguyen14

I went to check this out after seeing someone’s comment about your blog on Phil’s post; he also wrote about the prisons. I did comment on his asking why prisoners had trouble fitting back into society but your blog answered that. I thought it was interest Beria released these criminals to make himself the new dictator; it seems like there could have been better methods. Overall, I thought your post was great and everything was well explained!

Comment on Not a BUDAful place to be by nhinguyen14

I think it’s awesome that you got to visit this and then now learning the history behind it! Your post is great. Phil also wrote a post about the Gulags, you should check it out! It shows the horror inside the prisoner camps. I like that you pointed out the catalyst, which was Khrushchev’s denunciation of Stalin’s speech. This was a very important moment in history and set the stage for many events. It is disappointing to see Hungarians revolting, yet ending up at the same place of fear and terror in the end.
I also loved you added a link to learn more about the Hungarian people – definitely need to check it out!

Comment on Freedom from the Gulags by nhinguyen14

Wow loving the hyperlinks!! Was the release of the prisoners solely based on the death of Stalin, or were there other factors involved? It’s crazy that they kept all of their lives a secret, although it would make sense given the conditions. Any thoughts on why they had such trouble fitting back into society?

Comment on Germany’s Mistake is a Soviet Success by nhinguyen14

Great post! These were the factors we talked about in my group as well. I think Germany was coming off of a high from defeating previous countries and they were confident with Russia. With all their mistakes adding up, Russia became stronger and gained more advantaged as the Germany continued to be unsuccessful.

Comment on Factory Evacuees by nhinguyen14

As the comment above stated, I also agree this was a topic that is often overlooked. Your post said 17 to 25 evacuees, is it safe to say that was in millions? I thought it was interesting they moved industrial workers first, but it makes sense on why they did that. This emphasizes their focus on industrialization.

Comment on In Russia, Champagne Drinks You by nhinguyen14

This was awesome!! So unique and fun. I liked how you gave a history of champagne, originating from France and now into Russia. One of the things I was thinking about while reading this is the symbolic meaning of having Russian Champagne. I think this sentence, “To be able to put not just a glass of champagne in every hand, but Russian Champagne was a sign of success not just on Western terms but in the terms of the Soviet Union,” answered that question. Definitely a symbol of success and a carefree lifestyle with the champagne.

Comment on Power to the People by nhinguyen14

This was a great post – very easy to read and understand. I love that you related this back to the 1917 revolution and that this was one of their first steps to a capitalist society. I enjoyed the second poster as well as it demonstrated the success of NEP in different areas. Interesting that they made it a poster too, just because it incentivizes harder work and can largely promote it.

Comment on Whatta man, whatta man, whatta mighty masculine man! by nhinguyen14

Loved your post. It’s interesting to see they want women to embody masculinity. I liked the example of the changes in the clothing – I feel like that’s something that is often underestimated. You should check out the Tsarbucks blog! She also wrote about the changing role of women. I feel like you would enjoy it, considering it is on a similar topic.
