I think it is important to realize that in times of desperation and uncertainty people or the mass often turn to what or who they think will fix all of their problems. Regarding Russia, many believed Stalin, as you said, “as a god”. It is only after power is attained do individuals show their true colors. The most obvious comparison would be Hitler and his quick rise to power in Germany. Stalin’s public speaking skills, charisma and captivation seized the Russian population. But once he rose to power it was too late to go back.
