Comment on Sixth International Youth Festival by rachelharriman10

The title states this festival as being the sixth, was this festival held every year? Also, did each festival base its audience on the younger generation? Also, who organized this event; was it the government or some smaller organizational group promoting peace? Sorry I have so many questions, it seems that I’ll have to do some research on my own!

Comment on I Triple Doggie Dare You To Nuke Me by rachelharriman10

Nuclear weapons is a topic that brings many questions to my mind. As mentioned in your blog, if nuclear weapons were to be used these there would be destruction, I don’t believe all life on earth would cease, but it would definitely leave an absence of large size. However, if the use of nuclear weapons would only lead to MAD, mutually assured destruction, then how can it be used as a threat? If most advanced nations have this power of nuclear destruction, can it really be used?

Comment on The Girl with the Tokarev SVT-40 semi-automatic rifle. by rachelharriman10

I really enjoyed this post because as you mentioned the Soviet Union woman was much different from the American woman. This also serves as an example of the tough-mindedness of women in the Soviet Union, a characteristic that was often frowned upon in the United States. I wonder if it would have been beneficial to the United States to have such a large group of women joining their ranks?

Comment on Episode 5: The Motherland Strikes Back by rachelharriman10

Regarding your last paragraph, in retrospect to the Battle of Stalingrad, WWII or any conflict in general it is interesting to think about other possible outcomes that could have happened. To win a war it is imperative to have intelligent strategists and advanced weapons but also just plain luck.

Comment on Literally the Only Time the US and the USSR Didn’t Hate Each Other by rachelharriman10

In our text (Freeze), it mentions towards the end of chapter 12 how the Soviet Union or more specifically, Stalin slowly began to see the United States as a threat to all he had worked for (communist state). He also believed that after the war the United States would leave when in reality they stayed for quite some time for reconstruction. I think relations between the Soviet Union and the United State really began to deteriorate when talk about East Berlin/Germany came up. The Soviet Union in their minds owned this land and would input its political views while the United States and other democratic states thought differently.

My question would be as to why the drift began to break apart? Additionally, it is interesting to understand that although many things were happening within the Soviet Union, internal affairs did not attract all of its attention. The Soviet Union and Russia today remain a competitive country when compared to the rest of the world.

Comment on Episode 4: A New Purge by rachelharriman10

Regarding your last paragraph, the Soviet Union, Russia today, is still under scrutinzation for many questionable plots. Violence and secrecy has been their forte for decades now. The most recent is the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy, which many believe was carried out by none other than Russia.

And in this comparison of course the United States would be the White Army. I wonder if their was any real way to convince both the White Army during the Russian Civil War and the United States during the Vietnam war that it was worth fighting?

I believe that the divide undoubtedly gave more power to the Lenin and his government, which ultimately weakened any influence of the church. I think the split allowed more space for nationalism rather than a split between national pride and church duties. So yes, I believe that split between church and state increased the amount of nationalism among the population which led to their progression as a nation.
