I think if anything they thrived immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union because so much many were unsure, “what next”? I think once they rooted themselves in the government and started to reach out it just became harder to rid of the mafia and their organized crime tactics.

I think this relates to the end of the Soviet Union because it opened a window for the Russian Mafia to come through. Though the Russian Mafia was present during the Soviet Union, as mentioned in my post, they allowed them to work as long as it did not effect the agenda of the communist rule. After the fall their was no real agenda or plan and this made the Russian Mafia an accessory to the government.

I think Putin’s efforts to rid of the organized crime within the Russian government has been somewhat successful but of course there will always be some sort of corruption going on.

The mafia that was present during the Soviet Union was the same that was present afterwards. The only difference is after the collapse of the Soviet Union the Mafia was able to gain control within the government.

Whoever owned/controlled the Chernobyl facility at the time, since the failure of the reactor and consequently the release of radiation and other harmful chemicals in the air, where they responsible for the cost of those who died due to the release of radiation? Or were the families to handle that?

The lack of communication between government and the people definitely would have played a role in the declining trust towards the government. While I don’t have any questions, this post reminds me of the short clip we watched on Thursday, towards the end of class. The Chernobyl disaster was detrimental to some individuals who called the surrounding area home. It’s sad to know that some people choose to live here knowing the effects.

in your blog you mention how the Soviet Union always found a way to implement their propaganda into the everyday life of a Soviet citizen. This of course encouraged a strong sense a patriotism throughout the nation. Thinking about today, do you think Russia still implements this into their society and if so do you think Russians have a stronger sense of nationalism in comparison to other nations such as the United States because of this?

With the threat of a counterinsurgency against the Communist Party in Afghanistan, the Russian government thought it was important that they display their power and party importance through their presence. Looking back at the conflict now and how the Soviet Union handled this, do you think they should have still invaded or stayed abroad?

I think your point you made at the end in regards to censorship in the United States was very important. Although radio and television was available, both the United States and the Soviet Union could control what was aired. This gave government the power to in some ways form/shape the ideas or thoughts of an individual against those of another country.

The Soviet Union and the United States through this competition really show the determination and really arrogance to be better than the other. This competition for sure still lives on today.
