Comment on Russian Rock’n’Roll, Avoiding Mind Control? by jkelly24

I believe that there still is a strong sense, and growing sense, of Russian nationalism/patriotism today. It is certainly not at the level that is was back in the days of the Soviet Union and I would also say that it isn’t at the same level of that of the United States either. Putin has done a lot for Russia and one of those things is fostering a pride in the country once again after there wasn’t a whole lot in the first decade or so after the collapse.

I would say that to the majority of individuals they still enjoyed it due to the fact that they grew up under this oppressive and overbearing system that pushed this type of government views on their everyday lives. it is certainly a very interesting thought though considering how vastly different the two super powers forms of rock’n’roll were.

I don’t know for sure but I would guess that a few people were able to find western music. whether it was broadcasted long distance into the Soviet Union or distributed underground. Your question also makes me wonder if there was punishment if you were caught with or listening to western music.

I knew very little of the 1980s olympics besides that we boycotted it before reading your post. You did a really good job at laying out the reasoning for the US to boycott and also showing how it may have been a bad idea. I specifically found the reference to the US hypocrisy regarding the 1976 Olympics very interesting as well being that the civil rights movement had only recently found its success. I wonder what would have to happen for an Olympics to be boycotted today and how successful it would be.

You point out a very interesting point in your post about how Areoflot survived under communism and Pan Am failed under capitalism. I found this to be a very thought provoking statement. Under the Communist state were their other major airline companies to go along with Areoflot, if so did they survive the fall of the Soviet Union a well? Great post!

Your post shines a on what could be pointed to as the start of increased US involvement in the Middle East. Another ironic point to this is how the Osama bin Laden was a member of the groups that received us aid to fight against the Soviets. Overall your post did a very good job of simplifying the complexity of your topic. I found it incredible interesting that the Minister of Foreign Affairs orchestrated the assassination of his own leader. Seemed very Game of Thrones-ish to me. Great post!

The prime source images you used in your blog post are awesome and I loved seeing them. It really shows how much of an extent that Khrushchev was trying to push corn into the Soviet way of life. His fascination I find incredibly interesting as well. Great blog post!
