Comment on Memory as a Social Construct by ktsoukalas

The robot ended up in the loft because the memorabilia go there to be visited in special occasions. We got a life to live. “Memory as a social construct?” As in variable that contains social information? Some terminology used lately is to “offload” information to our technology: phones; post-it; what have you. Then we reload our mind when we need it. Simple; as long as the technology works. I recall that there is *this* awesome place in a city, as opposed I remember how to go there without a gps-enabled device giving me directions. Also our memory is creative; that’s why we should offload to our more reliable memory. Now if that memory talks with big corporations more than it talks with us; it is another story…

Comment on Public Education: Opportunity or Oppression? by ktsoukalas

I was left thinking whether “if we are to free students from this oppression with respect to critical pedagogy,” points to an accumulated debt due to paying tuition for education. There is an economic system in place and money is the currency. I would argue that supporting public schools creates opportunities for the students and fosters an economic “oppression” to belong in the current system and bear responsibilities planned by those in power. It is not one or the other. For an analogy: a person starts working in the kitchen of a restaurant preparing ingredients. They (he or she) observe and learn how to cook. When they have learned enough they might choose to start their own business, or they might remain at the same restaurant and climb up to being a chef. The systemic conditions of our socioeconomic systems will be present to both choices, but the opportunity to start a new business was given by the same system that “oppresses” our person. Space “oppress” us down to earth, but we want to go to Mars!:) – http://www.mars-one.com/

Comment on From Drones to Organ Donation We Cover it All by ktsoukalas

I wonder if “public speaking” is a “platform…” (social structure) “…to push an agenda” (such as opinions, arguments, and claims) by definition. No objection to regulate, discourage or censor in the classroom due to a judgment of appropriateness. Avoiding bias and dealing with moderating creativity and diversity in discussion topics could include the class by obtaining informed consent about discussing a topic from all class members (to be present; including the instructor), thus avoiding to impose a topic on any student and the instructor.

Comment on GMO (game-manifested outcomes) Learning by ktsoukalas

Video games could help learners ‘take things apart’ without the cost of buying physical things. Nevertheless, it takes a lot of resources to create high-quality simulations of physical things. I would love to learn with video game simulations, in fact I would love to learn how to fly an airplane, but I don’t have the money to pay for that education and did not think of investing my money to such an education. Until now… ?

Comment on Academic Responsibility-Who’s To Blame? by ktsoukalas

I would agree that grades may demotivate learners from pursuing to expand their knowledge in a field they lack competence, because of the fear of failure. Universities offer the possibility to audit classes, but it does not seem to be part of the plan of studies for the majority of students. Then again who gets a D? Also a graduate student may drop instead of getting a C. Which is why they might be demotivated from pushing against their knowledge boundaries. Which does not ‘feel’ flattering for the institution of education.

Comment on Choose Your Own [Learning] Adventure by ktsoukalas

While I agree that teaching styles and their combinations give a different learning environment, we often fail to point out the assumption that a teacher/educator knows about their subject well enough. Worse, we don’t frequently discuss that teachers may be asked or decide to teach something they are not knowledgeable with enough to communicate through any teaching style.

Press on Xing, you are not the only one ? and the struggle is part of educating yourself. Now in part you describe differences in cultures (read about Hofstede’s cultural dimensions if you have some time: 1. https://geert-hofstede.com/cultural-dimensions.html 2. https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_66.htm). Also I agree that learners come to a point that have to think for themselves and stop being taught by books or teachers all the time. There are many different activities to combine, and we need to challenge ourselves with the one’s we don’t feel comfortable with (my 2cents).
