Comment on How diversity can be worked by sogandmhz

Interesting blog! This is the same as what I also think about: what would happen if we incorporate diversity into my country; it definitely be chaos. But I think it is our responsibility as a young member of our society to promote diversity to reach the point that interacting with different people from the sociocultural background will be rewarding, not complicated or problematic.

Comment on A Visual Definition of Critical Pedagogy by sogandmhz

Thanks for this interesting blog post! I like that you use the visual aids to describe your definition of Critical Pedagogy. The most interesting one to me is the picture for banking model of teaching which is exactly what happened to me during elementary and high school. I think this type of teaching will completely ruin the creativity and critical thinking of the students.

Comment on Authentic Teaching by sogandmhz

Nice blog! I do not have a sense of humor in class either (funny GIF). And I think we still can be a good teacher if we make the learning fun (NOT hilarious). I agree that being approachable is the most essential character of a teacher, I remember that how I suffered in the class which the instructor was not approachable; I did not learn anything in that class. However, I got a good grade.
It is true that we build our teaching voice based on our previous experience, but it is important to examine new techniques and the teaching situation (e.g., type of class, the course content, the location) deeper to complete our experience-based teaching style and improve our performance.

Comment on Different Voices of Teaching by sogandmhz

Nice blog1 I like your point on “there is not a single truth for being the best teacher, we should create our own voice rather than adopt from someone else’s.” As you mentioned, assessing or interacting with all students in large classes(more than 50 students) is impossible, I agree the comprehensive rubric is a good idea, but I think the teacher must keep a record of the student’s performance during the semester and try to reach out student if he/she finds a low performance. I think every one of us will have our own teaching voice which may change from class to class and course to course.

Comment on A+ by sogandmhz

So do I! I killed myself through all these 23 years to get A+ in all courses I have taken, however, when I come back I rarely remember those that I loaded into my brain and unloaded them in the exam. I agree that this is our responsibility as future instructors to change the grade-oriented to the learning-oriented educational system. But how? This is not clear to me how we should facilitate this change.

Comment on Is this blog post for a grade? by sogandmhz

I completely agree with the points you emphasized in this blog. First of all, yes, I blog or comment for the grade. But this is because I grew up in the grade -oriented educational system and learned to compete for grades which significantly degrade creativity and deep learning. But you asked good questions about why we should change it and why we did not change it from the 1930s or how we want to change it. I also can see the naivety in learning-oriented learning and how the learning will be assessed in this system?

Comment on Trial-and-error-and-Google by sogandmhz

Nice points! I also learned what I know about Python programming from Google. I became frustrated at first when I could not write simple codes and receive lots of errors, then, I googled all errors, and the results helped me to figure out what was the problem. As you well said, when we make a mistake and learn from our mistake, it will stick to our mind (learn it deeply).
Good question! But how we can incorporate this learning technique in Civil Engineering to facilitate deep learning?

Comment on Pros and cons of exam-oriented education by sogandmhz

Interesting blog! I totally agree that exam-oriented education has its advantages and disadvantages. I think it depends on the content of the course. Moreover, some people –like me- are not good at memorizing stuff or stressed out in the exam-oriented educational system.
Definitely, a balance between active-learning education and exam-oriented education is necessary to make all student flourish. The instructors are responsible for taking advantage of the advantages of both to enhance learning in class. In my school, it is mostly emphasized in exam-oriented education which caused lots of stress in my life, however, in some cases, it was a good choice. I think exam-oriented may limit the creativity of students, and by carefully choosing the right educational system for each content, the instructor can facilitate deep learning for all students –even those who are scared of exams-
