Exactly! That’s why a lot of what I was trying to convey is that there is a lot of hope for these women because of the emancipation.

Also, that painting is definitely an interesting comparison to the brightly colored garments of the peasant women. I remember from my Russian Civ and Culture class that peasants typically stayed with more traditional dress and habits because it was comfortable for them in the world of progression.

That is a good question Carolyn. I think that the dress would depend on the original socioeconomic status of the women. I know that the intelligentsia leaned more towards westernized versions of clothes as part of their cultural agenda, but as for others I would have to look into that.

Thank you Sabrina! I think that Prokudin-Gorskiĭ’s use of bright colors in contrast to a simple photographic structure is the main driving force for a lot of his message in his photographs. I also think that contextualizing the people in photographs specifically makes history less like a story we tell each other and more like something that actually happened.
