Comment on A Cossak Encounter in Murmansk by jndickey

Lara, I found your post very informative on the ideas of the mindset of Russians on the eve of Revolution. Everything you mentioned is extremely relevant, from the need for railroads, the military dissent, and the Empire’s involvement and losses during WWI. I thought your questions were relevant too. I was asking myself similar questions about these men, wondering where they ended up during the Revolution. Keep up the insightful remarks, everyone gets wrapped up in big ideas concerning the Russian Revolution but few people focus on the people who lived during, chose sides, and witnessed the Revolution.

Thank you for your comment Mame! I wish there was more information and research provided about the clothing, I wonder if this was actually a uniform in that region or just typical clothing.

Annika I think you chose a topic that not many people explore. I found it most striking that most reforms were directed at the revolutionary concerns of men, but women forced their own way to the frontline of political and revolutionary discussions. I also find it ironic that educated women became a large voice for revolution while the government passed reforms, as previously stated, on the men. I’m curious how noble women felt about these changes, did they embrace their fellow women and support revolutionary causes as their husbands went bankrupt? Or did women of nobility worry about other aspects of change, or not care at all? Good post, it gave me a lot of food for thought.

You’re welcome! The update helps a lot. Still not sure that either one of the men with P-K is actually a Cossack. How did you figure that out? Also, check out Lara’s post about this same image, which situates it geographically: https://larastwentiethcenturyrussiaclass.home.blog/2019/01/31/a-cossak-encounter-in-murmansk/comment-page-1/#comment-15

Comment on Working on the Railroad by Elie Flack

Some of the consequences could be the rapid growth of the town. The railroad, plus the factory, and the fact that it was an area for ships to resupply has the potential to draw lots of people to the area which would cause competition with the local peo…

Based on perspective I think the ship’s size is a slightly exaggerated, but I think it is safe to say it is still extremely large! I felt the same way though about the smallness of the village. The factory in the background seems almost out of place in the peaceful looking town.
