I really enjoyed your title! It is absolutely applicable. I can not believe that a word for sex in reference to prostitution had to be borrowed from English because it is so taboo. The image you chose is very powerful and sends a powerful message. I think it is important to realize that this is the oldest profession. It seems that the Soviet Union severely over reacted and to the point flirting during a meal can be considered prostitution. It is not surprising that woman wanted to push the boundaries of Soviet society.

Thank you! That is very interesting. It is no surprise that people turn to the Church in times of hardship. Though, once it was no longer useful the communist gave the Church the boot.

Thank you! I have wondered the closed door relationship between Stalin and the Orthodox Church as well. For such a tyrannical man to tolerate the church is surprising. It makes me wonder if he had some Orthodox beliefs.

Thank you! Yes, over half the churches were closed. When considering the sheer number of people who followed Orthodox Christianity in Russia, it is surprising that it is not a more explored topic in historical circles. Especially, at a time when many Russian citizens found comfort in religion to deal with everyday hardships.

Thank you! I also found it odd that Soviets could be so open to abortion and be so oppressive towards religion at the same time. These topics obviously have issue with one another in more conservative religious practices, but it is odd to see social freedoms accompanied by oppression.

Comment on Reformism under Khrushchev by dylana94

I myself am a huge fan of the historical significance of the Khrushchev era! It was almost like a reemergence of Russian society after the dark cloud of Stalin was lifted. To think, that Russia began to develop consumer tendencies is just stunning. Nice job on your exploration of the space race and how it influence Soviet culture so drastically!

Extremely interesting topic! It surprised me to learn that a housing crisis resulted from rural migration to cities in Russia. The housing development gives perspective on how rapid industrialization that took place. To think, even with massive capital investment there never seem to be enough urbanized housing.

Comment on What’s a Woman to Do? by dylana94

It really stuns me to consider so much back tracking on abortion. To think several generations of women lived through this predicament. I like how you presented the struggle women dealt with in the home/work conflict. It seems like women were expected to be extremely capable, but did not receive recognition for their duality in the home and work place.
