Comment on 6: Academic Funding trumps Ethics – Criticism on Dr. Edwards’ involvement in Flint by jakeyel

Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed our class discussion on the topic the other day. One of the students who worked on the Flint project was in a class I took last fall and so we were hearing weekly about how the situation was developing. It was (and remains) very surprising how so many people can turn away from the dire need in Flint (and many other areas of the country).

I think one of the great effects of your work is that it has brought this issue to the forefront of discussion in Flint and beyond. I was living in Chicago before coming to Tech and it seems city officials may be taking the issue of lead contamination more seriously now than in the past (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/ct-chicago-water-testing-20160801-story.html).

I share your frustration. I had the same experience in my University back home, and not just among students, but faculty members as well. Reading a Lit Review that was a haphazardly stitched-together copy-pasted jumble of paragraphs from a tenured faculty with a PhD was very frustrating. What, indeed, can we do to change the system? I see it your way too – that if we start with ourselves and with the people we interact with, it is a step in the right direction, no matter how small that step may be.
