I guess that the exam-heavy education systems in East Asia come from the invention of the imperial examinations (科舉). Before the imperial examinations, people are evaluated by human observation. It was found that the examination policy is more stable in terms of selection.

I agree on the idea of treating every student as an individual. However, sometimes it is technically hard to do so when the classroom become bigger. I wonder if there is any strategy when you have to face a big class and some of them only take the class for the credits.

Agree. As I continuing my journey in grad school, I feel it’s really important to be able to survive through difficulties. It seems most technical problems can be solved. The problem that prevents us from progressing is usually beyond the classroom.
