Comment on “Korea-osity” by Ssu-Ying (Armani) Chien

I got attracted by your title! Haha interesting post! I’m from East Asian country. To be honest, I’m quite surprised that parents (and grandparents) would support their kids to do anything which they are curious about. For example, if I’m interested in KPOP and tell my parents I want to learn Korean culture and even take it as a potential career path, they will strongly discourage me at the very beginning. Because they believe only STEM area can give me better career and life!

Additionally, I agree with you that teachers need to find a way to stimulate students’ curiosity or try to match the teaching material with their curiosity. This might be easier in graduate courses where students are more mature and the class is typically smaller, while in undergrad courses, it’s very challenging to adjust materials for every single students. Perhaps, trying to separating them into smaller groups and giving them projects instead of assignments&exams will make the class more interesting!

True! Networked learning is very good for multidisciplinary studies. After reading your post and the comment (at the upper floor), there is an idea coming to my mind. Perhaps, the company which creates the Research Gate or LinkedIn should add a live-chat feature so that researchers can communicate their ideas much easily on these social media, as compared to sending emails…. Oh well… hopefully they will have this features when I become a professor… hehe :p

Comment on Why Blog? by Ssu-Ying (Armani) Chien

I feel you, buddy!!!! I’ve taken another course required me to blog last semester. Oh well! I survive with my Chinenglish! :p So, I believe you will do well too!!! I’m also an engineer, who is good at numbers instead of words. But learning how to communicate is very important as a researcher to share our majestic works with others!!!!

Anyway! Hope we’ll all have a happy blogging semester ?

Comment on I’ll admit it: I hate blogging (Week 1) by Ssu-Ying (Armani) Chien

I cannot agree with you any more! Haha! I feel the same. I like sharing my travel, my food and my life on Instagram, simply because I want to do it, instead of being required to do it. To be honest, I’m kind of a person who doesn’t feel quite comfortable to share opinions in public. It may take me half of day to think about what I should and shouldn’t say, even on facebook!!! To some degree, it is bad, especially in academia. However, lots of people may get into troubles, just because they are being too real. :p On the other hand, I’d like to take blogging as a way to know students or other professors outside of their works as a person, like their interests, cultures, travels and etc.
Anyway! If there is a like button here, I will click it!!! Hope we all have a happy blogging semester! ?

Comment on Diversity in the research group by Ssu-Ying (Armani) Chien

I hope your labmates are not Chinese :p hehehe~ because we are notorious for that!! I feel that while the university highly promotes diversity, the departments only do it through admitting more international students. After that, they don’t really do anything that help us get used to the new environment, know the culture differences in education,…. The only thing they care is Research!!!!! :p
