Comment on The Mask for Scientists and Engineers by Pranav

Well, that is a new way for me to look at the ‘mask’ reading. Interesting! I think there is more to the need of fabricating than to please someone, but I understand where you are coming from. It is a pressure for you now as a Ph.D. student, and these pressures would change with the course of time. I totally agree with you when progress and cost-efficiency should not be the guiding axiom. These are comparable with different space and time frames. I think it is important for a scientist to pursue an ideal to bring about a difference in any sphere of life he seeks to influence. Like Ra’s al Ghul points out in Batman Begins: If you truly devote yourself to an ideal, then you become a legend.

Comment on Open vs Guided Assignments by Carlos F Mantilla P

Hi Mel, sorry to reply so late. Thank you for your comment. In respect to the last comment, yeah, I am on the same boat, sometimes is just cool to write is more liberating. But I have also come to realize that for one reason or another, the more you reference people or link to other sites, the more your voice is heard. Probably because it gives a sign that you have done the work of informing yourself before writing, and knowing what others have already thought about it. And it can also be the best way to spread knowledge and work together with unknown people… but yes, at the end, not relying in others work is liberating.

Comment on Personal vs Professional by Shiqiang

I agree with the previous comments that it is difficult to find a balance between personal and professional life. But if I become an instructor in the future, I will try to be friends with the students in the class (if the class size is not that large) and probably share personal feeling as well as stories with each other. Bringing some emotion factors to the classroom definitely can help students learn better and sometimes even help instructor to know the strength and weakness of each student.
