Comment on Pedagogy Has A Context Outside Of The Classroom by Katie Ayers

“Effective pedagogy must be framed within social, economical, and by default, political contexts. Student learning can be more profound if we, pedagogists, guide students to use their knowledge base, curiosity, and critical thinking to break limitations of our local community, countries, regions, and the world.”
Yes! I so agree with this. I am aware most of my students will not go on to graduate school, so I am thinking about how to educate them to influence the world.

Comment on conformity vs. freedom | education through the eyes of Paulo Freire by kt.ayers@vt

Education “will be used or to foster conformity or to promote freedom.”
So.Much.This.
Doing education (the process of teaching) is finding the balance between the two I think. I need conformity to the rules of the classroom so my lessons don’t devolve into chaos, but I also want to encourage students to feel free to express their own ideas and think through ways to make their own lives more radical.

Critical thinking not only help students transfer knowledge into real life but also, as Freire suggests, helps them transform reality instead of just being in it as an object detached from it. Comment on How will you use your platform? by George Qiao

Putting practice in the class is a good way to apply the in-class knowledge to our real life. The practical way will make sense to understand the motivation of students’ learning. It will definitely help students be passionate for the learning. Also, it will be a tough job for teachers to come out these interesting materials. But what they done will be worthy of students’ performance.

Comment on Too Big to Fail by James

Too big for sure. A behemoth that needs to change. I was wondering earlier about who will get to make the changes and who from higher up will have their back. We are a long way from Pink Floyd’s view, but… many of those people are still in charge. Maybe not a banking model, but perhaps a business model, just like Higher ED!! But really, the change will have to be sold, not forced.

Comment on Common Ground by qzhilei

Learning and teaching are also paralleling for teachers and students. When students tried to learn from some course while they will have opinions for teacher’s teaching method. Their potential hope is to follow the way if they feel comfortable; or to change the way in the future if they did not enjoy the class. The similar situation is for teachers. Therefore, the essential reason is that students and teachers should be open to each other in order to make a good communication for concerns of their.
