Comment on Suppressing Heuristics by debjitg
By what I understand, heuristics arise from personal experiences whereas stereotypes occurs from certain perceptions prevalent in the society, without any personal experience. Is that correct Prof. Nelson? I have assumed that people are simply using heuristics and not stereotyping, although that might be false.

Thanks for your comment Amy. Coming from a stat background I typically never draw conclusions from a sample size of 1. But what my experience taught me was that heuristics should never be the go to option. There is a need to back everything up with data. People’s heuristics change over time with experience and repetitions.

Haha. I like my beard btw. I just do not understand why people have to profile others just by their appearance.

I am very skeptical as to how the rest of the world thinks. For example I think it will be ages till changes are implemented in India. It will still be numbers and ranking students by those numbers. The worst part of it is that employers rely on these numbers as a measure of quality. This combined with the prevalent rat race in India will ensure that much of what we talk in class never gets implemented. And mindless learning will go on. Students who can memorize things better than others will keep on out scoring those who do not.

Thanks for the comment Zhanyu. Think of it in this way. You will not be able to eliminate competition from education totally. People will be free to specialize in subjects and skills of their choice. Think of Stack Overflow exchange. Yes people compete to write the best answers, but in the long run, they do tend to specialize in certain topics. Similar in the case of MMOG where people play with specific characters and acquire specific skills.

Thanks for the comment Amy. The basic idea is to introduce gamification in education. Say for example some students is an expert with statistical softwares. This information would be publicly available. You could also have levels of a particular expertise area. Say for eg Bronze, Silver etc. This would be similar to online games people self select their roles. For example take the case of the popular game Overwatch. Players choose their characters such as healers, tank etc. In a term paper people could select their team mates depending on their badges. Say someone who is good at public speaking may team up with someone who specializes in statistics and someone who has good writing skills. This would then ensure better cooperation. I hope that answers some of your questions.

Thats a whole new Pandora’s box that you are referring to. This believe this could be a topic of discussion for class. But yes I agree that academia has a whole is trying to bring research closer to the general populace.

One of my incredibly foolish idea is to cancel every single individual and group project in classes and implement a single open class project. Off course there must be proper mechanisms to monitor individual contributions to take care of free riding. This is obviously not inspired by the Spartan military academy and something that I totally thought of by myself. The logistics of this is going to be an absolute nightmare though.
