Comment on The future of teaching by Cortney Steele

Thanks for the post! That is a great answer and supports how much we need to receive accurate feedback from our students. Of course at times it is very apparent the students don’t understand with them giving you blank stares. I definitely agree that at times the connection in terms of understanding between students and instructors is not clear. What seems like a simple concept to the instructor may not be as simple to understand for the student. Our teaching definitely needs to tailored to the student in the way that they learn best.

Thanks for sharing! I also think memory work is a necessary part of the process of learning. During my undergraduate course work, we had to take particular core course ( anatomy & physiology, microbiology, chemistry, etc.) to build upon in the higher level courses. I feel like more memorization is needed in those primary core classes. Then greater understanding will be developed through experience and further course work.

Comment on Bank balance by Cortney Steele

While the text may have overemphasized the prevalence of the banking model of education. I think there does have to be a continuum in which content learning takes place and followed by a more narrative learning approach. I feel like most of my teachers tend to teach using both banking and narrative models. Giving the students an opportunity to synthesize and apply what content they just learned.

Comment on Narrative learning by Cortney Steele

Nice post! I completely agree with the point you made we need to know the basics and general facts before we pursue learning in a more discussion and participatory way. I really like the idea of Narrative learning, but we definitely need to find time to learn the basics. Since others may be at different levels of learning the basics as well, when do we switch from banking to narrative learning.

Comment on Inclusive Teaching- My Experience by Cortney Steele

Thanks for sharing your experience! I don’t know much about the educational systems in other countries and have lived in the U.S. my entire life so it’s nice to get different perspectives. I’m sorry to hear about what happened to your friend. Much like was expressed in the article about the book The Hidden Brain by Shankar Vedantam, sometimes unconscious messages are sent unknowingly. Which I of course hope was the case for that instructor. The classroom should definitely be open to student’s thoughts, opinions, and ideas. And all students should feel safe speaking freely!

Great post Cody! I really enjoyed watching the video clip which is definitely a sharp reality of the direction society is taking. Definitely drives home the point in that we should connect with people on a different level. I agree a lot of emphasize is placed on the first categories you listed (gender and race). I really like that you point out instead we should learn more about the individual. Everyone’s comments reminded of the quote, “Don’t be so quick to judge. You only see what I chose to show you.” I also like that you talked about unity in the classroom. Bringing everyone on-board to the common purpose of the classroom.

Comment on Warm and Fuzzy by Cortney Steele

Thank you for the thoughtful post! You make a great comparison with the “warm and fuzzy” tale to today’s society. I agree I want to make my classroom a very welcoming environment where students can express their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. I like that you said inclusivity is a “need to be fulfilled.” I completely agree. We should focus on the needs of all students in the classroom so they feel safe and all are set up for success.

Comment on Is it just a “performance”? by Cortney Steele

Great post! I really like your emphasize that as teachers our classroom should be student-centric. I think the concept of seeing ourselves as facilitators is important. Having students being engaged and involved in the process of learning is a constant mission. In one of my classes we learned counseling styles such as directing, guiding, and following. I feel as teachers we should also be in the guiding as opposed directing role.
